A part of history....& a giveaway!

Hi ladies, how's everyone going today? Geez we've been having some HOT weather lately here and summer doesn't even officially start until December 1st! Oh how I envy those of you who are lucky enough to have a white Christmas! But I must remember that I just have to bloom where planted, and try not to wither and wilt in this heat in the mean time!

Today I would like to share with you something that I'm quite excited about. When I was a little girl growing up we had this old sewing machine in our home that belonged to my Dad's mother. I have always loved old things, particularly if they are a part of our family history. Anyway once I grew up and left home, my mum sold our family home and moved house, putting a lot of things in storage at a friend's house. I have been asking my mum about this sewing machine for years now, but for one reason or another we weren't able to get to this storage facility....until yesterday.

I'm just so happy to have this wonderful piece of our family's history back in my home! I can remember lovingly oiling this piece when I was just a wee thing, helping my mum around the house.......

Unfortunately when we rediscovered the sewing table yesterday it was in a pretty sad state and not as well cared for as I remember as a child, but to me it's still beautiful......

LuLu seems to like it too and has given her paw of approval......lol

For the last 17 yrs this sewing machine has sat just barely protected from the elements, but there wasn't a thing I could do to rescue it until yesterday. This morning we've cleaned it up as much as we can for now, but I will get stuck into it as soon as I can to really clean her up and bring her back to life!

I had always remembered this sewing machine as being a Singer, but it turns out that it's a Beale and Company brand.

I'm not too sure what this means, but I am assuming that it is the stitch sizes or something like that. A sewer I am not, so I'm guessing here.

I love this medal on the machine that has the company logo and says Advance Australia. This may sound a little silly to some, but when I read the Advance Australia part it made my heart swell a little. I love Australia and am very proud to be an Aussie girl.

So for now this lovely family piece has taken up residence in the laundryroom, until I can find a better home to display it. I'm just so thrilled to have it, to have a piece of my Grandmother really. My Nana died on the day of my 4th birthday. We went up to the hospital that morning to see her and she gave me a birthday present, Bert and Ernie hand puppets which I loved, then that afternoon we got a call to say that Nana had died of a massive heart attack. Little did we know that only 7 months later, her son, my dad, would also pass away from heart failure. Nana was 64 when she died, and my dad was 38 yrs old. My age now....

So anyway, you can see why this piece might mean so much to me. I love it, and I'm just so thankful that we were able to recover her no matter what her condition...

and now, speaking of vintage things........I was wondering if anyone might like to win these vintage Christmas baubles?

I have 2 sets to giveaway, each set containing a set of red baubles.....

and a set of yellow.......

To enter just leave a comment on this post. I'll draw the winner in a few days. Until then I wish for you a wonderfully happy week!

Love Amanda xxx

Hi Amanda! Most people are celebrating Thanksgiving here in the States today. We are at the barn!
I love, love your beautiful sewing machine. I also love the history. When I buy antiques I always ask about any history the owner can share with me. But family pieces are the best. I also have my great grandmothers sewing machine. She purchased it in 1926. All the attachments and the bill of sale are sill in it!!!
I know you will treasure this awesome piece of family history. I bet your grandmother is smiling down on you for giving her precious sewing machine a new life!
And someday you can pass it on to the Princess :)
Have a wonderful day, and try to stay cool! Here in the mountains of east Tennessee it was 35 degrees this morning! I love winter and fall much more than summer!
Blessings, Misha

Hi Amanda, I'm so glad you are posting again....and now I'm catching up on a few of your recent ones.

How wonderful that you were able to recover that amazing sewing machine again...I remember sewing with one like that when I was a young thing, with that foot pedal. I know it's a special treasure for you because of the wonderful memories it evokes.

As Misha said, we are celebrating Thanksgiving Day here today. But instead of her 35F in Tennessee, here in Southern California it is be 80F...much closer to your weather I'm afraid! But it'll cool down again in a few days. I'd love a white Christmas too, like you, but it'll never happen in Long Beach!

I love your giveaway, but please don't put me in the lottery, as I can't imagine you having to mail those all the way from Australia...it'll cost a fortune!

In the spirit of the day, I'd like to say I'm thankful for you and your blog. Your lovely, colorful home, gorgeous country, and generous spirit come through in everything you post. I'm proud to know someone from beautiful Australia!

I have a machine we lovingly rescued from a second hand store in Stanthorpe...it too has to be restored but has pride of place in my sewing room! Not a part of my history, but Aussie sewing history (which I am very proud of!!)
I do have a piano that takes pride of place in my lounge though that has similar meaning to me as your machine means to you...I can remember plinking away on the keys when I was very young and polishing it every week! Can't bear to let it go although it doesn't hold the notes very well any more!
Have a great week Amanda

Amanda, What a beautiful family treasure. I'm so happy you have it and will love it. It is beautiful. I tend to watch Antique's Road Show, which is a USA tv show. One of the things they do is tell how much something is worth. I can't tell you how many times they say this, "This product is would have been worth $3,000,000, but because you "cleaned it up" and "shined" it, it is now worth only about $10,000. "Ooops." Your sewing machine is so pretty. Please do check to see what to do to keep it still worth what it's worth. I know that I'd be the first one to jump in there and start scrubbing LOL. I just thought I'd mention this. Hugs, Kathi

What a precious story about your beautiful sewing machine. I am so glad it found its way to you. You know she is smiling down on you right now, so happy to see you treasuring it forever more.

All of your holiday decorations are lovely.....I just love this time of year.....It finally got cool enough here in Arizona the last few days to put our flannel sheets on! I always look forward to pulling my holiday ones out and making the beds all Christmas-cozy!

Happy Holidays sweetie!

We had a cool old sewing machine like that when I grew up ... Mom kept it in her room. It dropped down into the table and we actually sewed with it.
I don't recognize the markings, but it sure is a cool sewing machine and it reminds me of my childhood. Thanks for sharing it and I'm sure you will enjoy it.
