My Winter Garden...

Yesterday I was sitting outside in my garden under the bright Winter sun, sipping freshly made coffee from my new favourite (and thrifted) mug, and just marveling at how pretty nature is. We've really had hardly any Winter at all here this year, not that we ever do get much of one since it's pretty tropical where I live, so my garden almost looked like a Spirngtime garden to me as I was walking around admiring it. That made me think of those of you who blog about Winter in your neck of the woods, and how cold it is with deep snow everywhere for months on end, and I thought you might like to see what Winter is like for me here in tropical Queensland....

I've made you a cuppa too to enjoy while we stroll around the garden together...

I can never remember the names of any plants or flowers. I just plant what I think looks nice and is hardy enough to survive the drought and our long hot Summers. Isn't this such a pretty colour?

I do know that this plant is called "Snowflake". I remember that because I bought it just for the name! Can you see my other little white snowball curled up sleeping under the tree?

Good morning Miss Julietta! Sorry to disturb.....

I love these tiny little purple flowers. So dainty!

This is my favourite part of the garden. It's a huge mix of lots of different plants all living together in harmony under the huge Poinciana tree. This tree is a mass of red flowers during the Summer, and just so gorgeous! I blogged about this tree last Christmas when she was in full bloom. It's in my archives somewhere. Don't ask me where as I can never find anything in my archives! lol

A big "Staghorn" plant living on the tree with part of the Snowflake plant waving on by....

Then I walked around the back of the house to sit by the pool. I love to watch the birds dipping and diving into the pool. They take turns doing this. One will stand guard watching out for Miss Julietta (our cat) while the other skims the pool for a quick bath and a drink. They do this over and over for the longest time! I'll have to try and get a photo one day of it for you.

My heart is torn. While I do love the snow and look forward to our holidays down there very much, there is just something about the tropics that makes my heart skip a beat when I see her beauty all around me everyday. The sun, the sea, the sand....it's magic!

I hope you enjoyed your cuppa and tour around our little Jacaranda Cottage. I am going to take a little blogging break for a few days. I've got some projects on the go and just feel the need to pull back a little to re-group myself. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend and that the coming week is full of fun and happiness for you all!

See you soon....Amanda (aka Cottage Contessa)

Oh youre so lucky!!!!! While I do enjoy "looking" at the snow (not shoveling with my bad back) I would jump at the chance to live in a tropical area..your pics are beautiful...and kitty is adorable!

That was wonderful, Amanda! I do think sometimes I would like to live further south so I could garden longer ....... but, alas, I would miss the Fall leaves and the snow. I just wish I could snap my fingers in February and say "Enough is Enough!" and then it would be Spring. HA!

Loved the tour of Jacaranda Cottage. Wish I could come by and visit.
You mentioned you would like to read the book "Searching for Spice". I asked the author if you could get it in Australia. Here is her answer: I'll try to copy and paste it. Here it is.

I just went online and discovered that an Australian online book seller (they don't have Amazon down there) can supply SFS. It's http://www.thenile.com.au/. I put SFS into their search engine and they have it available here: http://www.thenile.com.au/search.php?sid=18630aac1da38e168922aaa3dc673707&s=searching+for+spice+.

So, if you need some good reading for your winter months - it would be Searching For Spice by Megan DiMaria.
Enjoy. Hope you have a nice break.
Hugs.

Ah, Amanda, what a great walk around Jacaranda cottage--oops, I need more cream in my tea! Mind? Thanks, can I just sit out here for awhile? What a nice place to enjoy early winter light!

Wow, what a lovely garden to stroll through, and with such an adorable coffee mug to enjoy it with! I love the snowflake plant. We have something that I think is the same plant called Giant Snowflake. We have had such a hot hot summer with an early monsoon season that several established plants are dying! It has been rather dreary! So happy to see all of your beautiful greenery to give me hope in the fall when I replant! Thanks for the tour of your beautiful gardens! Wish I could stop by for a cup of coffee and a personal tour with you! Send some cooler weather this way please....we need it! LOL!

Having lived in southern and central Florida most of my life I can relate to loving the flowers and greenery, being a constant garden, all year long.

I just spent my first winter since I was a kid in Michigan, in NC. I was a little worried about the drabness of winter being depressing. I can tell you that did not happen. We loved it here this winter and every season for that matter.

I will say the Sunshine is important to me and we have a wall of windows that lets in the light perfectly.

I loved all your garden pictures.
Enjoy them all winter long. Smile!

I enjoyed the tour! Staghorns are one of my favorite.

And I, like you, bought a plant just for the name: Snowpea. So pretty and ornamental.

Enjoy your projects! We will be here waiting for you when you return.

Thanks for the tour and cuppa, Amanda! So great to catch up with you now we're back. We had FAB time in London! Resting travel-weary feet and doing lots of laundry now...LOL! Happy weekend ((HUGS))

Hi Amanda :)

I'm sorry Precious Princess had the same issues as Annie. It's so hard being that age, but shopping DOES help ;)

Your winter looks like the ones we had when I was young and lived in California. We used to have to have the air-conditioning running for it to be cold LOL

Your gardens are beautiful :)

hugs,
rue

Your garden is so beautiful, Amanda! As much as I complain about winter, and pine for spring, I honestly don't know if I could live without the change of seasons that we have here...

Enjoy your time off! And give that cute kitty a kiss for me. :)
xoxo,
Mary

What a lovely garden you have! I am totally jealous. I have been searching high and low for a staghorn fern but have yet to come across one.
Your cat is beautiful as well, but I guess she already knows that. HA! Have a wonderful week.
