Yay, finally! I have had this china cabinet for a long, long time and have wanted to paint it for a long time too but felt too guilty to paint it before now because this china cabinet was given to my Grandparents on their wedding day on 17th Nov, 1934 by my Grandmother's parents. It was then given to my parents on their wedding day on April 2nd, 1959 by my Grandparents. I grew up with this cabinet all of my life and even as a little girl I would help my mum dust and oil it, oh so lovingly. Neither my sister nor my brother ever had an interest in having the cabinet, but I have always loved it, so on our wedding day....Jan 17th, 1993 it was given to us with love from my mum. I have always looked after it and cherished it, but now my taste is changing away from dark woods towards the shabby chic, french country look. After talking to my mum and my aunt about it, I felt a lot better and not so guilty about finally painting it. I just love it again now! I've always loved the shape of the little feet, and the velvet lined draws are just beautiful inside too. I hope my grandparents and great-grandparents won't mind the new look, but somehow I think they would love it too after talking to my mum.
Anyway, here's a look at before and after (if you're a dark wood lover, then maybe you should look away now! lol).......

I'm still playing with decorating the top, but this will do for now until I get some more time to play. I'm hoping to get around to visiting with you all very soon too, but until then I hope you have a truly wonderful week!
Lots-a-luv..........Amanda xxx

It's beautiful Amanda! We have J's mother's little china cupboard and I've often thought of painting it.
Have a wonderful week!
It's beautiful! I love all your white furniture... I'm sure your grandparents would love this now.
SMiles.
You did a beautiful job, Amanda. I like the lighter colors too. So the remake was right down my alley. What a wonderful story behind it. So great to have a heritage like that. Love, Elena
I love it! I have a china hutch that is oak that I want to paint. It looks too 80's to me. Everyone thinks I'm crazy but I think it would be pretty painted. You're giving me courage.
Hugs, Susan
Oh my gosh, Amanda. It looks incredible. The difference is spectacular.
You go, girl.
You are so brave. i think it is wonderful....I have a table and buffet from my grandmother...but I don't think I have what it takes to paint it...well at least not yet! lol Dianntha
WOW! I love it white.
As I read the story, I thought: Ohhhhh she's going to regret painting it white!!! So hard to remove paint!
That's what I was thinking until I saw the photos and now I think, very honestly:
IT WAS MADE TO BE WHITE.
It's perfect.
I'm glad you painted it. It's just right.
Good choice.
Amanda! It looks so pretty! Whata great job you have done. I love it!
Love,
Sue

It's lovely Amanda. I can understand your hesitation to paint over that beautiful dark wood so lovingly cared for all these years, but you are right...now it fits with your decor. Those beautiful soup tureens look good on top too.
I don't know if it's kosher to introduce bloggers to each other, but have you ever visited Mary at Across the Pond? You can find her on my sidebar. She's very into French country and has been doing some recent painting too.
You might enjoy her blog.

That turned out so beautiful! I know what you mean about feeling guilty painting over an old family piece, but you know what, you still have it, it still holds all your memories and you are treasuring it even more! It looks great!
Hugs, Sharon
I love how you redid the cabinet and the collectibles look so pretty on the top. New blog background looks sweet too!
WOW! I love the transformation. I am so timid to do it but I have many pieces I would love to paint!
