This wonderful man is my Uncle Rex. He's married to one of my mum's sister's, my favourite Aunty Claire, and today is his 78th birthday! (sorry to announce your age to the whole world Rexy, but hey, that's a big milestone to be proud of!)

Here's Rex at my parents wedding. Rex is standing at the back on the right holding one of his sons, my cousin Randy (who I also think is just the loveliest man, and an awesome father to 6 kids and now a Grandfather to a few too!) Obviously Rex's amazing parenting skills wore off on his children too!

Rex (on left) and my Dad (on right) were not only brothers-in-law, but they were also the best of mates. My Dad died when I was 4yrs old (33yrs ago now) and Rex told me many years later that that was one of the saddest days of his life. My Dad traveled overseas a lot for his work and on one of his travels he brought back a watch and a clock for Rex. Rexy recently told me that even though both the clock and the watch have long stopped working now, he still keeps them because they were from such a good mate.

Our families spent many happy times together, picnicing and....

sailing.....oh and can I just mention that my amazing Uncle Rex built his own 48ft yacht by hand, by himself, and then packed up my Aunty Claire once they retired and together they went sailing around Australia. Rexy, you're just so awesome and always so much fun! Aunty Claire is the first to say what a blessing her wonderful husband is and what a joy their life together has been.....one long exciting adventure she says!

When we lived in Sydney in the 70's, Rex and Claire and their 4 children would drive from Queensland down to visit us, and we'd have a terrific time playing at the snowfields. So many wonderful memories of my childhood involve Rex and Claire. Here they are with my brother Dale, their daughter Julie, Aunty Claire holding yours truly, moi, their other daughter Debbie, Rex and my sister, Sonya. Such a happy day, and the last snow trip before my Dad died.

After my Dad died, Rex stood in for him as a father figure in my life, and he'll never know just how much that has meant to me. Anytime their was a father-daughter thing on, I could count on Rexy to be there. When ever I needed a shoulder to lean on or some wise advice, Rexy was there. That's how I know that there are Angels on earth as well, because he's been one of mine. He took me under his wing and loved me like I was one of his own. Thank you Rexy.........

I really miss my Dad (on the left being silly with Rex) but Rex has been such a wonderful role model in my life, he made life with out Dad so much easier to bare....

No matter what's going on in our lives, from the big to the small, if there's something we need help with Rex is only a phone call away and only too happy to help. Here Rex is helping my husband John clean out our shed. I think one of the things that I love most about you Rex is your sense of humor. Even the most boring jobs become fun when you're around!
So to you my Rexy, I wish you a truly wonderful birthday! We love you.
Have a great day ladies, and you too Rex!
Love Amanda xxx

I am so glad I picked this particular moment to catch up on your blog. What a beautiful story. Such an amazing person Rex is and always has been in your life to you. I think all of us need a Rex in our life like that, to just always make everything better.....What a special connection you have. I had happy goosebumps when I read how he kept the clocks your father gave him. Happy Birthday Rex! Those photos are true treasures.
